Veins of Steel is an exhibit appearing at the Steelworks Museum this fall. This project is the result of a yearlong endeavor in which I toured CF&I’s coal mines, towns, and the steel mill in Pueblo, Colorado. While on location, I made drawings of the current state of the mines and the altered landscapes that that they left behind. I also visited the CF&I 1901 administration building and surrounding Bessemer locations to create unique drawings of the steel mill and the environment that it produced. After I completed my on-site work, I used the drawings to create paintings that showcase Pueblo’s iconic blast furnaces in contrast to the isolated remains of the company’s mines and towns that are scattered throughout Southern Colorado. A Colorado Creative Industries grant was awarded to support the project.
